THE GREAT GADFLY:

Jerry Springer Made Me Do It

It tends to be the fall from grace that grabs our attention. Kurt Cobain only got interesting when he died, Marianne Faithfull's records are overshadowed by her heroin addiction, Winona Ryder will become iconic through a police mugshot, we only look twice at Elton John because he's a freak. We don't read about Robbie Williams or Brad Pitt with envy, but with contempt, as a spoilt attention-grabber makes a tit of himself again and again and again and again. In this age of confessional television, it is our weaknesses that will come to define us. The supposed objects of our admiration have become a testament to human failure - a poignant example of what will befall us if we 'rise above'.
