THE GREAT GADFLY: Elephantitis Of The Cool What can I say about the new White Stripes album except for "GO GET IT NOW"? 1. It's much better than their last album, which really wasn't very bad at all. 2. Meg White gets to step to the other side of her mini-drum kit and sing a bit. She is a Keene painting come to life. 3. "Ball & Biscuit" is one of those kick-ass songs that make the hair stand up on your arms. If you don't have hairy arms, go find someone who does, play the song for them, and look at what happens. See? 4. The last song on the album is just freakin' adorable. 5. I felt like the White Stripes were lumped into that whole "Strokes/Hives/Vines" mess simply because they were a bit retro and their band name started with the word "the". This album gives weight to the argument. It's just a coupla damn talented kids doing their thing and doing it really well. 6. The CD has a pretty silkscreened image of a red bird on it. I like birds. 7. There are no annoying little skits, segues, or guest vocal appearances by Gwen Stefani, Ja Rule or J.Lo to be found on this album. 8. The album cover is one of those that's gonna age really well with time. Whether "Elephant" makes a dent in posterity or not, it's got the look of a classic album cover. 9. The album has a really good song about prescription medication. 10. The first thirty seconds of this album makes you go "AWWWWW, yeah." I love that.
